For the Strength of Youth Cranium:
Last summer, our stake young women leaders challenged all the young women to read the entire For the Strength of Youth (FSOY) pamphlet. The girls have to read FSOY anyway in order to pass off Choice & Accountability 2 and Integrity 1. We did not read the entire FSOY at this activity, but my goal was to help them get started.
This was one of my favorite activities. It turned out to be fun and the girls seemed to like it. Several of them asked questions about standards and some of them gave examples of how they follow standards.
Here's what you'll need:
- Playing cards. You can download mine here.
- A copy of the For Strength of Youth pamphlet, which you will need to highlight. If you look at the cards, they will show you which color to highlight each section.
- Two cartons of Play-doh. Three if you're shopping with young children.
- Word strips of some mixed up words. The words you'll need are in the cards (each card in the "zelpuz" category). The word in the above picture is "education," for those of you who are like me and can't move on until you've figured it out.
Here's how it worked: We divided into two groups. I drew a card, then invited one player from each team to come up play the card for their own team. Each card gives instructions on how play that round, gets a point, then has to read the highlighted section of FSOY aloud.
The key part was reading the highlighted section out loud. That's when the girls talked to each other about standards and asked questions.
I am planning on doing this as an activity tomorrow night. It is such a great idea! I was wondering what the different colors of highlighting are for so that I may be able to explain why they are highlighting in different colors? Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas!
ReplyDeleteI would also like to learn more about the highlighting. I plan to do this activity next week. Thanks....I already printed the cards and I'm excited to try this.
DeleteHi, it says that EACH CARD will tell you which color to Highlight. I know this question was from a long time ago, hope this helps more people like myself that can try this in the future!

ReplyDeleteWe did this for a combined activity tonight. We are new in our ward and my husband and I immediately got called as YM and YW presidents. Our youth are not super committed and don't have a lot of support from home and they don't get really excited about activities but tonight they all stayed and participated all the way to the end. For where we are, that is a huge success. Thank you for all your wonderful ideas!

ReplyDeleteI'd love the pdf as well, as I can not get the above link to download. My email is munsellec@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fun activity I love cranium!
I am a little confused with the highlighting and the rules of the game as well. Could you please explain the game a little more. I can get the cards no problem. Thanks in advance.
ReplyDeleteI noticed in your Work and Self-Reliance picture there was one paragraph that had two areas highlighted blue. In that example would both those highlighted areas be read in one turn or did you direct them to read a specific area? Which I guess brings me to another question. Did you leave it up to them to find what needed to be read or did you give it to them? I am thinking about doing this activity next week and want to make sure I am clear before doing it. By the way, I love this idea and appreciate your willingness to share.
ReplyDeleteWhat did you figure out to do with the highlighted bits?
DeleteWhat are the word strips for and the play doh? My email is dlanier2010@gmail.com

ReplyDeleteHi there! I think this looks like a fantastic activity! Thank you so much for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI'm confused on what to highlight in the For the Strength of Youth booklet. I see your example that each topic has multiple colours highlighted. Could you please email me and explain it a bit further?
Thank you so much! (mldavy@gmail.com)
Would love an email also please! stephaniebridges66@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteMe too can you email the PDF file. thanks so much. starclayton@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI've done this activity and it was SO fun! You download where it says:
ReplyDelete"Here's what you'll need:
Playing cards. You can download mine here. "
The here is blue so it is linked. It takes you to dropbox but you do not have to log in. Just print.
We highlighted as we went along. Each YW would read the piece associated with the card and highlight it. I found that it's ok if you don't highlight in the exact colours of the values, it still works.
Ann, nice job putting together a great game and teaching tool for our youth. All the comments must mean this post is popular, but it seems many people haven't discovered what the comment just before mine discovered (Mrs. Nelson) - that you don't have to log into drop box to print the file. Somehow logging in takes you away from the file link. As she says above, just print the file when it comes up from the link. You may want to edit the original post to say that, so many comments asking for an email of the pdf, that's a lot of time! Thanks for your service!
